Well we’re back from book club in Italia which was held in Candida’s hotel, just slightly more glamorous surroundings than usual. We will have to fill you all in next time but it was beautiful and sunny and we were by a swimming pool…..
So the book – well people who had read it seemed to quite like it, it was definitely a lighter and easier read than recent books. But to me it was lacking in much substance (or interest). Some of the stories were better than others – Freddie de la Hay’s expeditions were enjoyed, as was reference to the Large Hadron Collider coinciding with the news reporting discovery of the Higgs Boson particle. But the Barbados hotel and Hamish’s ridiculous story told for no apparent reason were less successful. It was also clear this was part of a series, with references to past episodes, and some loose ends obviously to be continued in future books. Overall – a light, easy read which entertained briefly.
Next time we have an homage to Barry Unsworth, who died recently, with The Songs of the Kings, Ruth’s choice for August. We meet on Friday 10th August at Ruth’s flat.
Then for September in a surprising burst of patriotism no doubt inspired by the Jubilee, Sean has chosen England, England by another previous author, Julian Barnes, who wrote the much loved Arthur and George.
Choosing next for October reading – Sian.
Finally – David Copperfield – who wants to come and see Ruth next week? Let me know what day suits and we can ask Ruth to reserve us some tickets.
